The Nuts and Bolts of Posing
Posing has been a foundational element of Western Art for centuries. From the cave paintings in Lascaux, France to the cover of Vogue magazine today, the art posing has played an important role in telling stores, preserving moments, and making sure people look good.
People come to us from walks of life and with all mindsets about having their portraits taken. Some are excited to be in front of the camera, and some would rather not be there at all. No matter what your client’s mindset is, my goal is to pass on the tools needed to meet your client where they are at and create a portraits session that they and their loved ones will enjoy.
We’ll look at posing from both a general sense and then break it down to best practices specific to men and to women. We’ll talk about posing to correct problems your client may be sensitive to, including how to deal with heavy men and curvy women. We’ll talk about working efficiently, creating more variety from few poses, and avoiding getting “stuck” and running out of ideas when working with a client. We’ll finally spend some time talking about body language, those small details that can change the entire look and feel of a portrait for better or worse.
Posing can be like fashion, trends will often come and go. However, the foundational principles of posing almost always remain no matter what is trendy right now.
In the end people want to look good in their portraits, and they have hired you, a professional photographer to capture them and/or their loved one in ways they cannot do themselves, to make them look good, to tell their stories and preserve their legacy. It is my hope to impart the tools you need to accomplish this!
The basic module is 4 hours, additional modules can be added and include group posing, couples posing, and much more depending on the time allotment.
Skill level - Advanced Amateur to Professional
Taught throughout the country at many State Professional Photographic Organizations and during many PPA Super One Day events in May and September. Check back for future scheduled events!

Certified Professional Photographer Prep Class
This class is specifically designed for those who are pursuing PPA's Certified Professional Photographer. This is a 2 day course that covers all the material you'll encounter in the CPP exam. We tackle the hard concepts of the CPP exam and help make them easy to understand and apply not only to the exam but also to your every day work.
We'll cover all 6 areas of the exam:
1. Cameras, lenses, and attachments
2. Exposure and meters
3. Lighting
4. Composition and design
5. Digital post-production
6. Image capture and output
Although these topic may appear simple, remember that this is a deep dive into all of these topics in preparation for the CPP exam. Not only will this help you pass the exam, all of these concepts will help your everyday work by giving you the tools to incorporate a greater level of precision to your work.
We finish the class with a demonstration on the practical image making (taking a picture of Sherman and his still life). We'll cover all 5 pages of instructions as these 3 photographs will be submitted in RAW format, and they will have to be with the specifications outlined in the 5 pages provided by PPA. Whenever possible, I have my colleague Bob Rider, Photog., Cr., CPP teach this segment of the class as he is available.
Earning Certification may not be easy, but well worth the time and effort!
